the other grand final
I went to my first ever Grand Final today. The Ashy Redbacks played Beverley Hills. The crowd was convivial. The smell of hotdogs all pervading. There were kids and dogs everywhere.
The game looked like it was going to be a rout. The Redbacks were 42 points down before they registered a score.
But they fought back. They kept coming.
They lost, agonisingly, by one solitary point. Bar the result, it was a pretty great game of footy.
We were there for my nephew, Harrison. Number 8 for the Redbacks. We will all give him equal parts consolation and a hard time, because that is just how it goes. But I took a camera, and watched him play through the lens – in between keeping an eye on James, who was determined to make friends with everyone in the park. Harrison – well, he’ll be pretty flippant about it.
But I could see the determination on his face as he played – and I feel for their loss. We all do.
Hopefully, this won’t be my last Grand Final.
